Agaves are unique in the whole plant world, not merely because of their succulent character but because of a special role they have played in the indigenous civilization in North America.

Part 1
Background to Agaves

METL PLANT, one of the earliest illustrations of agaves as depicted by Hernandez in 1651. In the beginning man's image of agave was crude.

The Historical Perspective.

Agave hosted man in the New World; man transported and hosted agave in the Old World.

Agave supplied the hunting and gathering tribes with food, fiber, drink, shelter, and miscellaneous natural products.
